On Wednesday, August 9th, author and self-proclaimed “environmentally minded historian,” Caroline Grego, will appear alongside Charleston mayoral candidate, Mika Gadsden, at Hed Hi Studio on the peninsula. The event, “History and Hydrology,” will be an exploration of the connections between our past, the current climate crisis and sustainable solutions for Charleston’s future. The event is inspired by Grego’s most recently published book, Hurricane Jim Crow: How the Great Sea Island Storm of 1893 Shaped the Lowcountry South and will feature a discussion and Q&A with the author. About the book: “This narrative history of a monumental disaster and its aftermath uncovers how Black workers and politicians, white landowners and former enslavers, northern interlocutors and humanitarians all met on the flooded ground of the coast and fought to realize very different visions for the region’s future. Through a telescoping series of narratives in which no one’s actions were ever fully triumphant or utterly futile, Hurricane Jim Crow explores with nuance this painful and contradictory history and shows how environmental change, political repression, and communal traditions of resistance, survival, and care converged.” Local environmental educator and hydrologist, Rebecca Fanning, and Afrofuturist/Griot, Sara Makeba Daise, MA will also present during the event. This event is FREE and open to the public, however, attendees are encouraged to RSVP. The event starts at 6:30 pm. Hed Hi Studio is located at 654 King Street, Suite D.
